Phoenix’s career began in the theater, and she appeared in various stage productions throughout the 1940s. In 1945, she made her film debut in the British drama “Fame Is the Spur,” earning critical acclaim for her performance.

In 1960, Phoenix landed the role that would define her career as Elsie Tanner on “Coronation Street.” She brought the character to life and quickly became a fan favorite, portraying Tanner’s working-class charm and resilience.
