A Flock of Seagulls
A Flock of Seagulls is a British new wave and synth-pop band formed in Liverpool in 1979. The band’s distinctive sound and signature hairstyle made them one of the iconic bands of the 1980s.
The founding members of A Flock of Seagulls were Mike Score (vocals, keyboards, guitar), Ali Score (drums), Frank Maudsley (bass), and Paul Reynolds (guitar). Mike Score’s distinctive haircut, often referred to as a “waterfall” or “wings,” became a defining fashion statement of the era.
The band’s self-titled debut album, “A Flock of Seagulls,” was released in 1982. The album’s lead single, “I Ran (So Far Away),” became a massive hit both in the UK and the US. The song reached number 7 on the UK Singles Chart and number 9 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song remains the band’s most well-known track and has been featured in numerous films and TV shows over the years.
A Flock of Seagulls continued their success with their second album, “Listen,” released in 1983. The album produced the hit singles “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” and “Space Age Love Song.” “Wishing (If I Had a Photograph of You)” peaked at number 10 in the UK and number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100.
In 1984, the band released their third album, “The Story of a Young Heart.” The album featured the singles “The More You Live, the More You Love” and “Never Again (The Dancer).” While these singles did not achieve the same level of success as the band’s earlier hits, they solidified A Flock of Seagulls’ reputation as pioneers of the new wave genre.
A Flock of Seagulls continued to make music throughout the 1980s and 1990s, releasing several more albums, including “Dream Come True” (1985), “The Light at the End of the World” (1995), and “Ascension” (2018). While their later work did not reach the same commercial heights as their early success, the band maintained a dedicated fan base and continued to tour and perform live.
