Semisonic

Semisonic is an American alternative rock band from Minneapolis, Minnesota, formed in 1995. The band consists of members Dan Wilson (vocals, guitar, keyboards), John Munson (bass, vocals), and Jacob Slichter (drums, percussion, keyboards). Known for their infectious melodies, thoughtful lyrics, and exceptional musicianship, Semisonic rose to fame in the late 1990s with their hit song “Closing Time.”

History:
Semisonic’s roots can be traced back to the band Trip Shakespeare, formed in the late 1980s, which included Dan Wilson and John Munson among its members. After Trip Shakespeare disbanded, Wilson and Munson teamed up with Jacob Slichter to form Semisonic in 1995. The band released their debut album, “Great Divide,” in 1996, which received critical acclaim but initially had limited commercial success.

It was Semisonic’s sophomore effort, “Feeling Strangely Fine,” released in 1998, that propelled them into the mainstream. The album featured their breakthrough single “Closing Time,” a poignant anthem about new beginnings and transitions, which became a massive hit worldwide. The success of “Closing Time” earned Semisonic a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Song in 1999.

Semisonic continued to produce music in the early 2000s, releasing their third album, “All About Chemistry,” in 2001. While not achieving the same level of commercial success as their previous work, the album showcased the band’s continued growth and versatility in songwriting.

After a hiatus, Semisonic reunited in recent years and released new music, including the EP “You’re Not Alone” in 2020. The band continues to tour and create music that resonates with fans old and new, showcasing their enduring appeal and talent.
